What is a suitable method for extinguishing a Class D fire?

A Class D fire involves combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, and sodium, which can react violently with water and other extinguishing agents. Therefore, it’s essential to use methods that do not exacerbate the situation. Sand is suitable for extinguishing Class D fires because it can smother the fire by removing the oxygen supply and also cool the burning metal, preventing re-ignition. This method is effective since it isolates the burning material from the air while minimizing the risk of a chemical reaction.

Water, foam, and CO2 are not appropriate for Class D fires. Water can react explosively with burning metals, foam may not effectively smother the flames or may also react negatively, and CO2 does not provide the necessary smothering effect nor is it effective against these types of fires. Therefore, using sand is the safest and most effective choice for extinguishing a Class D fire.
